Behind the scales: Meet our new mascot!

We’re excited to announce that we’ve got a new company mascot 🎉 🎉 🎉 - the Pangea Pangolin.

What is a pangolin?

It’s the cutest little mammal you may never have heard of (yet). It’s unique and has a natural defense system with its armor-like scales. And, here at Pangea, we want to enable developers to build this same natural defense into their apps!

These adorable scaly animals live across Africa and Asia and are solitary and primarily nocturnal. They eat ants, termites and larvae, and so are often called scaly anteaters. Fun fact: they are the only mammal that is fully covered in scales. 🛡️

Unfortunately, pangolins are now endangered and are the most trafficked mammal in the world for their meat and scales. Current government regulations across the globe have increased protection of the Pangolin species and made trade of these endangered animals illegal.

Why did we choose the pangolin?

Besides it being an adorable cross between a pinecone and an anteater? Well, pangolins, by nature, have everything they need to protect themselves against natural predators in the wild and use their armor-like scales as a shield. A startled pangolin will cover its head with its front legs, exposing its scales to any potential predator. If touched or grabbed it will roll up completely into a ball, while the sharp scales on the tail can be used to lash out.

At Pangea, our aim is to enable developers with pangolin-like tools (our API-based security services) to help them code secure applications fast. Just like pangolins are born with natural armor, we give developers the tools they need to develop secure-by-design applications from the ground up.

The pangolin’s uniqueness also deserves a spotlight to drive awareness of its current plight. You can learn more about the pangolin, including how to help this threatened species on The World Wildlife Foundation’s site: https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/what-is-a-pangolin.
